Lots of great features but good luck using them!
The MP171 looks like a great deal with many office-friendly features and great networking functionality to both Macs and Windows, provided by a company that talks up its support for business. However in reality the machine is difficult to use with cryptic instructions, an indecipherable control panel, and no support.
No support, you say? Well, it comes with a THIRTY DAY warranty. So in our office, it took over 30 days for us to realize that we needed help operating it, getting it to scan documents without distortion, and clearing the endless series of warning messages it displays... after all, we're IT pros and should be able to figure it out, right? By the time we called, we were told it was out of warrantee and to get a service contract. Repeated web submissions, phone calls and emails to Ricoh never got us a return call... probably because we were asking for support on only one machine (they always asked how many...). Ricoh is supported by IKON, which never returned calls or emails either: with IKON it seemed that you needed a service contract in order to talk to someone about buying one. Then I was told Ricoh had bought IKON. No surprise there.
Perhaps if you're a Fortune 500 that somehow already has a service contract, all will be well. Or maybe if you bought the printer directly from Ricoh instead of your regular online merchant. But if this is your first Ricoh, may heaven help you.
I'm shopping around for an HP to replace my 4-month old MP171.
